Another new virus is spreading through social networks, this time, via Facebook. This one – known as Bredolab – masks itself as a “Password Reset Confirmation Email,” appears to come from Facebook, and attaches a file that purports to contain a new password.

That file is actually a trojan horse that will download a host of nasty files from the Web and infect your computer with them. Email security firm MX Lab explains further:

“Bredolab is a trojan horse that downloads and executes files from the Internet, such as rogue anti-spyware. To bypass firewalls, it injects its own code into legitimate processes svchost.exe and explorer.exe. Bredolab contains anti-sandbox code (the trojan might quit itself when an external program investigates its actions).”

The way to avoid this one: if you didn’t request your password from Facebook, there’s no reason you should be getting a password reset confirmation email, so don’t open it. Further, even if you did, Facebook() would not send your new password as an attachment. Finally, f you’re still not sure, take a look at the full details of the email – if the mail server’s don’t belong to Facebook, you know the message is not legit.

How many pictures do you have on your computer that you’ve not printed and are no longer on your camera? Are they important, baby, wedding, special holiday/events. You should back these up, your computer is not going to last as long as you!

One of the main physical issue I see when someone brings me a computer or laptop in Virginia Beach is the hard drive. This is the only mechanical part inside a computer apart from the fans and will 95% of the time fail first. The hard drive is the part of the computer which stores all the data so 95% of the time the data is lost!

If you have a small amount of data like pictures and documents, then you can use a CD or DVD. If you have over 1GB of data, then you will want to get an external hard drive or usb flash drive becuase these two can hold a lot of data that a CD or DVD can not.

There are varouis ways to backup your information these include.

Backup External Hard Drive (a USB device you can copy your data to)

Online Backup Service (your data is uploaded /copiedto a server somewhere in cyberspace)

Optical/Tape Backup (copy your data to a blank DVD/CD/backup tape)

USB Flash Drive

It is very convenient to be able to sit across the house from the wireless access point or router and be connected to the Internet while sitting on the couch or lounging in bed. You always need to keep in mind though that your data is being beamed through the airwaves in all directions and that if you can receive it from where you are, so can just about anyone else within that same range. In order to protect your data from snooping or prying eyes, you should encrypt, or scramble, it so that nobody else can read it. Most recent wireless equipment comes with both WEP (wired equivalent privacy) and WPA (wifi protected access) encryption schemes that you can enable.

WEP was the encryption scheme included with the first generation of wireless networking equipment. It was found to contain some serious flaws which make it relatively easy to crack, or break into, so it is not the best form of security for your wireless network.

WPA was later rolled out to provide significantly stronger wireless data encryption than WEP. But, in order to use WPA, all of the devices communicating on the network need to be configured for WPA. If any of the devices in the chain of communication are configured for WEP, the WPA devices will typically fall back to the lesser encryption so that all of the devices can still communicate.

Refer to the owner’s manual for your wireless router or access point to determine how to enable and configure encryption for your device. Once you enable encryption on your router or access point, you will need to configure your wireless network devices with the proper information to access the network.

If you can use WPA you should because it is much more secure. However, even WEP is better than nothing and will keep casual snoopers and novice hackers out of your wireless network. Using encryption with a longer key length will provide stronger security, but with a slight performance impact.

To help understand why a fragmented hard can slow down your computer it may help to understand the process better, or how the operating system populates the drive.

A hard drive consists of a number of different blocks and sectors and this is where your data is actually stored. When you write data to the drive rather than place the data in s predetermined position the data is dropped almost randomly over the entire platter or multiple platters in large hard drives.

To exacerbate matters a single file can consist of a number of individual pieces of information that are scattered around and when you query the drive for the information the drive heads have to visit multiple sectors of the drive to pick up the full file.

This is in effect like cutting up your credit card and scattering the individual pieces around the house, if you go on line to make a purchase you would then have to run round the house to collect all the individual pieces of your card in order to make payment (get the file our need).

In hard drive terms this is called a fragmented drive. A fragmented hard drive can also shorten the lifespan of your hard disk as the heads have to work many times harder to scour the drive to find all the parts of the fragmented file. Windows has its own free defragmentation utility you can use as part of your system maintenance, or you could buy a more refined version that lets you set automatic background defragmentation of your drive during slack processor and usage cycles.

Just removed a virus from a laptop for a customer in Virginia Beach. When I was reconnecting it to their wireless network I noticed that it was unsecure. At the moment there are two types of security on wireless routers. WEP and WPA, WEP is the older security standard and can easily be hacked. Most BT Homehubs run on WEP as do SKY broadband routers by default. However they are both capable of the more secure WPA features.

You should check that you are running WPA, or at least WEP. If there is no security your neighbours will probably be stealing your broadband. However the real concern is if you have a neighbour that knows what they are doing! They could be intercepting all your online activity. Anytime you log onto hotmail or online banking they can be taking your passwords. If they are real geeks then they can see everything on your computer!

If you’d like to get your network checked then give me a call.

No matter who you talk to, everyone has either had a computer virus or knows of someone who’s gone through the agony of trying to get rid of the problem. Computer viruses are a hot topic that seem to affect everyone who owns a computer, whether at work or at home. The companies that produce application programs that catch and delete these computer viruses are constantly updating their databases for virus types and definitions so that you can better protected against all the newest viruses. Developing virus protection programs is a multi-billion dollar business that’s growing more and more everyday. The number of viruses being created and uploaded to the web is growing at an astounding rate of at least two every eighteen seconds! This definitely keeps the virus protection companies on their toes with research and development.

Because these viruses copy themselves to any computer we come in contact with, the spread of viruses throughout a computer network or the web is a fast and deadly inconvenience to happen to your computer. Because computer viruses are a hot topic, they’re routinely the subject of magazine articles and forum topics online. While some viruses do nothing but frustrate you with pop-up ads or other messages, others are malicious and set out from the start to destroy the files and operating system on your computer.

Of the 53,000 viruses that have been identified and classed, over 80 percent of them have been classed as malicious and capable of harming your computer process or data files. These computer viruses behave in much the same way as biological viruses by contaminating any computer system that it comes in contact with. These self-executing programs are generally small and work at damaging the way your computer works or by damaging or removing key process files.

To prevent viruses from taking over your computer, scanning all downloaded files with an anti-virus program before opening them is important. It’s always a good idea to take the time to ensure that the file you thought you were downloading is indeed the file you have. For instance, a file that labels itself as a movie file and is less than two megabytes in size is not a movie file. Movie files are generally almost a thousand times that size and therefore, the file you have downloaded is most likely not a movie file and may in fact be a computer virus.

When computer viruses are a hot topic, more and more people find out about the destructive power of these programs. In this way, people find out about virus protection programs and rush out to get the newest protection programs or ensure that their computer virus protection is up to date. Many magazines and news articles about computer viruses have the effect of sometimes panicking people in to believing that their computers are at risk. Having a quality anti-virus program and current updates is two of the best ways to protect your computer against virus attacks.

The just-released version 3.5 of Firefox is a winner, offering significantly faster Web browsing, better tab handling, a host of interface tweaks and, like just about every other browser on the planet, a “porn mode.” If you already use Firefox you’ll want to upgrade right away. If you’re not a Firefox user, this version represents a very good opportunity to give the browser a test run.

Need for speed

For many people, the browser wars are all about one thing: speed. There’s no doubt that version 3.5 of Firefox is significantly faster than version 3. Pages load noticeably more quickly for a number of reasons, not least because Mozilla built a new JavaScript engine called TraceMonkey for this version of Firefox.

How much faster is open to debate. Mozilla says it ran the industry-standard SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark, which measures how quickly browsers render JavaScript, on versions 2, 3 and 3.5 of Firefox, and asserts that the newest version is more than twice as fast as Firefox 3 and more than ten times as fast as Firefox 2 on the test. Other testers have reported similar results.

Of course, rendering JavaScript quickly doesn’t necessarily mean that all Web pages load faster. Microsoft, for example, argues that for most Web pages, other kinds of speed-ups are more important than rendering JavaScript quickly. I’ll leave that debate to Microsoft, Mozilla and other browser makers. But putting aside any speeds-and-feeds specs, I can tell you that from the user experience, Firefox 3.5 is lightning fast — it seems to me about comparable to the recently-released Safari 4.0 for the Mac.

Private Browsing

Any browser worth its salt these days has a porn mode, and with version 3.5, Firefox now has one as well. It’s called Private Browsing (Internet Explorer’s is called InPrivate Browsing), and it works as advertised. When you browse the Web using it, nothing about the session is stored — no history, no cookies, no temp files, no forms information, no search information, nothing that can show where you’ve browsed or what you’ve done. To turn the Las Vegas tag line on its ear: What happens in Firefox doesn’t stay in Firefox.

To use Private Browsing, Select Tools –> Start Private Browsing, or else press Ctrl-Shift-P. Unlike with Internet Explorer, a new instance of the browser doesn’t launch. Instead, a warning appears, asking you if you want to start a Private Browsing session and telling you that Firefox will save your tabs if you want to start one.

Starting a Private Browsing session

Firefox then closes your existing tabs, and immediately launches a private browsing window. From here, browse the Web as you normally would, and nothing of the session will remain. To end the Private Browsing session, close Firefox as you would normally, or else select Tools –> Stop Private Browsing, or else press Ctrl-Shift-P. The current session ends, and Firefox launches with all of your previous tabs intact.
